Can A Goat Get A Dog Pregnant? (Answered!)

No, it definitely could not. Goats and dogs are far too distantly related for that. Two species must, among other things, have roughly or exactly the same number of chromosomes to be able to mate. Goats have 60 chromosomes, dogs have 78. There is no possibility of mating.

Hybrid animals are one of the strangest areas of modern zoology.

Ligers, zonkeys, and even whale hybrids are all known to have existed in some form or another.

Goats are part of a rather small family of animals, so there isn’t a lot that they can breed with other than themselves—but what about dogs?

Could a male goat impregnate a dog?

Interbreeding between different species is remarkably difficult.

Even if you do manage to get two different species to make, the chances the fetus will be viable are extremely low—they are very often stillborn.

Let’s look further into this.

Can A Goat Get A Dog Pregnant?

Can a goat and a dog mate?

Not really, is the simple answer.

They don’t really have compatible genitals to “mate” in a true sense.

Dogs are sometimes observed to mount female goats and attempt to mate with them.

This rarely goes very well, though, and the goat won’t put up with it.

Even if it did, it’s unlikely that the dog will persist with it.

When it comes to a male goat and a female dog, the answer is also no.

A male goat certainly might try, if he is particularly excited and a female dog is all that’s around.

But goats do also have strong prey instincts, and dogs might just scare them off.

Even if both animals were totally receptive, though, again, their genitals are incompatible.

No actual mating could really occur.

Mating would be, at best, extremely difficult, then, if not impossible.

So, does this preclude the possibility of the goat getting the dog pregnant?

Can a goat and a dog have a baby?

No, they cannot. Firstly, they couldn’t mate in the first place.

A goat could not get a dog pregnant, nor vice versa.

There is no way that a goat and a god could mate to the point that the dog or the goat could be impregnated from mating with one another.

You may be wondering, then, whether it might be possible through artificial insemination.

Again, the answer is no. Goats and dogs have completely different genetic makeup, though they are both mammals, and certainly more closely related than a lot of organisms on Earth.

The main problem, as I mentioned, is the number of chromosomes.

For two animals to even have the possibility of mating, they need to have almost identical numbers of chromosomes.

Even if they do, this doesn’t guarantee they can mate.

They also need to be closely related in the first place.

Take, for instance, turkeys and pigeons.

They both have the same number of chromosomes at 80.

Despite both being birds, though, they are not closely related enough to successfully mate.

Another good example is goats and sheep.

Their number of chromosomes is close—sheep have 54 to a goat’s 60.

They are also closely related, at least more so than goats and dogs.

Goats and sheep can mate, but virtually any offspring that results is going to be stillborn.

So, even if you can get them to mate and impregnate one another, in two species as closely related as goats and sheep, the likelihood that they will have a healthy birth is virtually zero.

So, no, goats and dogs cannot have babies together.

But can they live side by side?

Can goats and dogs live together?

It takes a lot of preparation, but yes, goats and dogs can get on reasonably well.

As I’ve mentioned, goats have a reasonably high prey instinct, so dogs can easily scare them.

You’ll need to acclimatize them to another over a long period, ideally starting before either animal has matured too much.

The dog will need to be well trained even as they are acclimatized to each other at an early age.

Their prey drive could intensify as they get older, and they may suddenly be too much for the goat to handle.

So, with time and careful attention, goats and dogs can get on really well with one another.

What can goats breed with?

Are there any non-domestic goat species that goats can create hybrids with, then?

There certainly are, although documented cases are rare.

There’s not much advantage to any of the hybrids you might be able to successfully create.

Goats can breed with ibexes pretty successfully, for example.

Such hybrids have been documented over the years, the result being a reasonably large animal with features of both animals.

Markhor, too, can successfully breed with goats.

There have also been reported cases of cross breeds between goats and African antelopes.

Again, they are in the same family, so breeding is a lot easier.

There are also various genus of mountain goats which are classified as distinct species from domestic goats.

These, too, can breed with domestic goats.

So, there is no such thing as a goat-dog hybrid. It’s impossible.

They have totally different genes, chromosomes, not to mention reproductive apparatus.

Goats and dogs cannot and will not ever be able to mate and produce offspring.

As I’ve said, hybrids are really rare, and generally are only possible between species that are extremely closely related.

Even then, it’s still usually very difficult. Between goats and dogs—impossible.
