If there’s one particular landscape with which we associate goats here in the U.S., it’s mountains.
Goats are rugged and hardy creatures, associated with the western frontier as much as they are with the gentle pastures where most domestic goats are actually found.
So, today, we’re going to look at some great mountain goat names for your goats—whether they really are mountain goats or not.
Let’s get started.
Rocky
Starting off with one everyone knows, the Rocky Mountains.
This mountain range dominates the western United States, and you’re sure to be familiar with it.
It’s a great name for your goat, too.
Matterhorn
One of the most popular mountains in the world to climb, the Matterhorn of Switzerland.
This impressive peak sits in the Alps and is visible from multiple countries including northern Italy.
A great name for a horned mountain goat!
Darwin
One of the most prominent peaks in California, Mountain Darwin.
Darwin is a great name for an animal in itself, given its association with Charles Darwin, father of the theory of evolution.
This is a great name for your goat.
Logan
There are multiple peaks known as Mount Logan in the United States, but again, it’s just a great name in itself!
It evokes many things and is a satisfying one to call out over the homestead to get your goat to come home.
Andes
The most prominent mountain range of South America, covering a distance of five and a half thousand miles, the Andes.
There are countless goats and goat like animals living in this range, so it’s a great name for your goat.
Irazu
Further north in Costa Rica, we have the Irazu mountain, surrounded by craters and gorgeous views of Central America.
It’s a great and exotic name for a goat that could be a great conversation starter.
Dusty
If the Rockies are associated with any one state, it’s Montana.
The Dusty Star Mountain is one of the state’s many gorgeous peaks, and makes a great name for a goat with a grey or darker coat.
Oyu
The 6th highest mountain in the world, Cho Oyu, found in Tibet in the famous Himalayas.
It is a beautiful and frightening peak, and its short, snappy name makes a great one for your goat.
Chimborazo
Our first volcano, if an extinct one, Chimborazo.
If you’re looking for something more of a mouthful for your goat’s name, then this is the one for you.
This volcano is found in Ecuador.
Major
Military titles as animal names are always a great one, but this is also a mountain peak in the Australian wilderness.
You can’t go wrong with a name like this!
Kidd
Kidd is another great name for a goat even without any mountain associations—this is what we call young goats, after all.
But did you know there’s a peak in Alberta, Canada called Kidd?
Again, you can’t go wrong!
Denny
Though you might have to explain you aren’t naming the goat after the diner chain, the Denny Mountain is found in Washington state.
It’s another great name for your goat that mixes a real mountain and a good name.
Elbrus
Another extinct volcano, this time in Russia, Elbrus evokes feelings of age and wisdom.
We often think of goats, with their little beards, almost like old wizards, so this is a great name for many reasons.
Everest
This list would of course not be complete without a nod to Everest, the tallest peak in the world.
Found in the Himalayas and the ultimate climbing challenge, everyone will know exactly what you’re going for if you call your goat this.
Api
In the northwester of Nepal, you will find three sharp, icy peaks jutting out from the mountain range—one of these is named Api.
This is another great, snappy name for your goat.
Nona
This is another one that is great even if there were no mountain with the same name.
As it happens, though, there is a peak in Norway called the Nona Mountain—where some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world are found.
Kamet
The second highest peak in the region of Garhwal, in India, where some of the highest mountains in the world are found, is named Kamet.
This is another mythological feeling name that is great for your goat.
Lena
Back in the U.S., in Washington again, we have Mount Lena—also known as Mounta Baldy.
Lena is a great name for a female goat!
Rainier
Sticking in Washington we have the highest peak in the Cascade Range, Mount Rainier.
It’s an eloquent and interesting name for a sophisticated goat!
Orizaba
Another dormant volcano in Mexico, Orizaba is a unique and exotic name for your goat that evokes mystery and the exotic.
Echo
Echo itself is a great mountain goat name, since echoes are a common feature of mountain valleys.
But the Echo peak is located in the Madison range in Montana, so it has many great associations!
Mountains are a geographical feature that can capture our imaginations like nothing else.
It’s understandable to want to name your goats for these impressive features, not least because of the associations that goats themselves have with mountains.
There are, as you can see, countless options for mountain goat names—I hope some or one of these works for you and your goats!
